Climate Adaptive Water Management in Potato Production

Climate change poses significant challenges to potato production due to increasing temperature variability, changing precipitation patterns, the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and the emerging trend of persistent weather. Potatoes, with their shallow root systems, are particularly sensitive to drought, heat and waterlogging, making adaptive water management critical for sustainable cultivation. This paper summarises climate impacts on potato production, discusses the role of sensor technology in monitoring crop performance and water use, and highlights adaptation strategies at the field, farm and regional scales to improve water productivity and mitigate climate risks.
